What are the disadvantages of RAS system?
RAS system also has few disadvantages when compared to open pond culture.
#1. These are expensive to develop as it involves buildings, tanks, plumbing, biofilters. This will also cost more amount to operate pumping, aerating, heating and lighting.
#2. RAS systems are complex and require skilled technical assistance to manage successfully.
#3. These systems require constant supervision and technical support to manage and maintain complex circulation, aeration and biofilter systems.
#4. There would also be a chance of mechanical and electrical power failure which results in fish loss. So these should be operated with maximum carrying capacity which requires fail safes in the form of emergency alarms and backup power and pumping systems.
#5. The business and biological risks are considerably high when compared to open pond culture.
