Why is contour farming used?

Contour farming is a method of farming which is used by farmers to plant the crops across the slopes to follow the contours of a slope of a field. This kind of arrangement of plants in contour lines creates a water break, which in turn decreases the rills and gullies which would be formed at the time of heavy water run-off. This sudden heavy water run-off is the main reason for soil erosion.  This kind of practice used for prevention of soil erosion will decrease the chances of minimizing productivity of crops, the quality of water getting worse, floods, destruction of habitat and also reservoir water levels. Hence,  Contour farming is considered a sustainable way of agriculture these days.
